They showed up on our porch with their guitars so I sprayed on lots and lots of my special perfume - "OFF" mosquito spray and bravely entered the night air. After tuning their guitars, they began to play the most beautiful music we have heard since we came to Nicaragua. They took turns singing songs about our Lord Jesus Christ, while both played their guitars. The songs were all Nicaraguan in style, which sound a little Mexican, at least that is what we thought. I (Liz) understood most of the words to the canciones. Then they played 'How Great Thou Art' and sang it in Spanish and then we sang it in English (they said we sang beautifully??)
About half-way through, I made the guys some coffee (instant coffee that is and they love it here - we don't quite get why they like instant so much) and brought out some special home-made peanut butter cookies and some chocolate chip ones too! Wow, did that make them happy...the guys kept saying 'que rico' - which is kind of like saying 'yummy'.
While we were chatting and eating cookies and drinking coffee, Ramon's wife (Brenda) and two children came by on their way home from church. Since Brenda likes to sing too, she then sang a few songs accompanied by them on the guitar.
It was a wonderful Nicaraguan evening...the serenade lasted about 2 hours! We all sat on our porch, singing & listening to wonderful people singing beautiful songs - even the mosquitos liked it but thank goodness they did not get too much 'gringa' blood thanks to my special perfume. We loved every minute of our 'serenade'!
Sounds wonderful, wish I could have heard it too! Linda W
